What do you need to know about spondylolysis?
Spondylolysis is a unilateral or bilateral defect of the pars interarticularis, an isthmus of bone connecting the superior and inferior facet surfaces in the spine at a given level (Figure 1 ). The pars defect may either be an acute fracture or a chronic osseous disruption with sclerotic borders.
What's the difference between spondylolisthesis and lumbar spontylolysis?
Lumbar Spondylolysis Video Importantly, spondylolysis only refers to the separation of the pars interarticularis (a small bony arch in the back of the spine between the facet joints), whereas spondylolisthesis refers to anterior slippage of one vertebra over another (in the front of the spine).
How is the progression from pars defect to spondylolisthesis different?
While the progression from a pars defect to spondylolisthesis is the mechanism of isthmic type spondylolisthesis, the pathophysiology of degenerative spondylolisthesis is different.
How is spondylolysis related to lumbar lordosis?
On physical examination of patients with spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, there may be evidence of increased lumbar lordosis (inward curvature of the spine), decreased range of motion of the spine, pain upon lumbar spine extension, or a palpable step off of the spinous process (representing anterior displacement in spondylolisthesis).
