During the remainder of the play, Mr Birling continues to reveal himself as being selfish and without regret. He is continually worried about the threat to his dreamt of knighthood and, when the chance arises, is even happy to direct all the blame at his young son, Eric.

Throughout the beginning of the play he displays the kind of arrogance that Priestley expected to see from a selfish capitalist; throughout the exchange, he is completely unapologetic about the death of Eva; and after the inspector leaves, he tries his hardest to get out of trouble.
